What Parents Need to Know
Q This is my child’s first time at sleep away camp; can he/she be registered for a shorter session than 6 weeks?
A Camp Kadimah is a 6 week summer camp, but arrangements can be made for a first time camper to stay until Visitor’s Day.
Q How does my child get to camp?
A Campers travelling from Ontario are requested to book their seat on a chaperoned West Jet flight through our travel agent, Keith Silverberg at Suntastic Travel. This flight, to and from camp, is chaperoned by Kadimah Alumni as well as staff. Once the group lands at the Halifax Airport, a bus will take them to the camp grounds. Campers coming from the Maritimes will be bussed from the Halifax Forum to Camp.
Q What happens if my child is homesick?
A Some new campers will become homesick within the first couple of days while they adjust to camp life. You need to know that the camp staff are there to make sure your child is doing well and having a great time and that the staff are there to comfort your child when they are feeling upset. It is recommended that you write your child a letter and mail it a few days before he/she comes to camp.
Q How can I communicate with my child during the summer?
A Receiving mail from home is an exciting part of the Camp experience for Campers of all ages.
We encourage parents to write frequently. Letter writing to parents is mandatory for all Campers. Please be patient and remember that mail from Barss Corner to communities outside Nova Scotia may take up to 5-6 business days. Campers can receive email. All email must be facilitated through the Kadimah Website.
Q How much should we pack?
A On the Summer 2010 portion of the website, you can find a packing list of everything your child will need in the PDF file Camp Kadimah 2010 Manual. It is important to have at least 2 weeks worth of clothing.
Q What are Camp's facilities like?
A Camp Kadimah is located on the beautiful Lake William, in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. Campers live in cabins that are equipped with running water, washrooms and electricity. There are several large multi-purpose programming buildings including a cultural centre equipped with a large stage for dramatic productions and an indoor gymnasium for basketball and floor hockey among other sports. A beautiful amphitheatre is used during programs and services.
The dining hall accommodates all campers and staff at one time, and is a common place for daily announcements, and singing songs after meals. There is a full kosher kitchen at camp serving delicious and healthy food three times a day as well as snacks in the afternoon and at night.
Q Is camp Kosher?
A Camp Kadimah brings in kosher meat from Toronto and Montreal. Our head cook of over 20 years has been trained in kashrut, and checks products for hechsher. There is supervision and checks by senior administration. Because of kashrut, outside food is not allowed.
Q Is camp nut-free?
A Camp is nut sensitive. Due to allergies, no products with nuts are used, including peanut butter. Because of allergies, outside food is not allowed.
Q What are the religious practices of the Camp?
A Camp is non denominational, offering services on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. Traditional egalitarian services, orthodox services and reform discussion services are options. Participation at a service is mandatory. Camp is not shomer Shabbat, but respects the practices of all campers and allows for shomer Shabbat options for programming.
Q Are there trained medical staff in camp?
A Kadimah has a doctor and nurse on the premises at all times.
Q When is Visitor's Day?
A Visitors Day is Sunday July 25 from 11 am to 4 pm, Halifax time.
